Restore Gaps in your Smile

Crowns and bridges are types of restorative dentistry. Although, crowns and bridges can also be used in cosmetic dentistry, as they improve the appearance of your teeth. However, their main purpose is to restore function and structure.

Damaged or missing teeth can interfere with your comfort and change your bite. With crowns and bridges, dentists can repair your oral health.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, sometimes also called caps, are placed over a tooth to restore shape. When the top layers are damaged, dentists can add a crown to restore appearance and function. However, severe damage or tooth decay can impact the integrity of the whole tooth, so a dentist first needs to assess tooth and gum health before recommending a crown.

Crowns are customized to match your smile and bite using X-rays and moulds of your teeth. They can be made from various materials, including metal, porcelain, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. Creating a crown can take 2 weeks, but your dentist can fit you with a temporary crown between appointments.

Dental crowns are more than cosmetic dentistry, as they also protect the structure of your jaw and face. Dentists can also add crowns to improve tooth strength after root canal therapy or a dental implant.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are a solution if patients have one or more missing teeth. It’s placed with 2 attachment points, bridging the gap over the missing tooth. Then, an artificial tooth is created to fill the gap.

A traditional bridge attaches to 2 healthy crowns, so the area needs preparation before a bridge is placed. If your natural teeth cannot support a bridge, you may require an alternative bridge, such as a dental implant bridge, for a more secure anchor.

Typically, a bridge procedure requires 2 visits. The first appointment prepares the attachment points, including taking an impression (mould) to create a custom bridge. Then, the dentist places a temporary bridge until the next appointment. During the second appointment, the custom-made bridge is set by cementing it to healthy teeth or dental implants.

There are several different types and materials used for dental bridges. Our dedicated dental care team can recommend the best fit for you following an examination. Then, after assessing your unique oral care needs, we’ll discuss the best options. Regardless of type or material, bridges can look and feel completely natural, restoring the appearance and function of your teeth.
