Crowns are customized to match your smile and bite using X-rays and moulds of your teeth. They can be made from various materials, including metal, porcelain, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. Creating a crown can take 2 weeks, but your dentist can fit you with a temporary crown between appointments.
Dental crowns are more than cosmetic dentistry, as they also protect the structure of your jaw and face. Dentists can also add crowns to improve tooth strength after root canal therapy or a dental implant.
Dental bridges are a solution if patients have one or more missing teeth. It’s placed with 2 attachment points, bridging the gap over the missing tooth. Then, an artificial tooth is created to fill the gap.
A traditional bridge attaches to 2 healthy crowns, so the area needs preparation before a bridge is placed. If your natural teeth cannot support a bridge, you may require an alternative bridge, such as a dental implant bridge, for a more secure anchor.
Typically, a bridge procedure requires 2 visits. The first appointment prepares the attachment points, including taking an impression (mould) to create a custom bridge. Then, the dentist places a temporary bridge until the next appointment. During the second appointment, the custom-made bridge is set by cementing it to healthy teeth or dental implants.
